The MPO holds its Annual Convention every Labor Day Weekend and has done so since 1922. Held throughout cities in the United States and Canada at premier hotels and convention venues, the MPO Convention has grown from a simple annual business meeting to a celebration of Macedonian-American and Macedonian-Canadian heritage, customs, and traditions. The Convention still serves as the MPO's Annual Meeting, where Delegates from Local Chapters meet to conduct the business of the MPO and elect members of the MPO's Board of Directors.
Each year, the MPO welcomes Macedonian families from around the United States and Canada to its Annual Convention. Multiple generations of Macedonian-Americans and Macedonian-Canadians come together at the MPO Convention to celebrate the unique customs, heritage, culture and traditions of Macedonians in the United States and Canada.
The Macedonian march Izgrey Zora has traditionally been performed at all MPO events for the last 85 years. (download lyrics)
The MPO Convention features large dances with traditional Macedonian music, workshops on Macedonian dance, cuisine and wine, networking events for Macedonian business people and professionals, golf outings, river and lake cruises, late night songfests, youth dances and outings, and displays of historical photos of MPO conventions dating back to the earliest days of the Convention. The MPO also confers its Chapter of the Year award and the Damian Grueff Award, awarded annually to the MPO's Member of the Year, at the Annual Convention.
The Annual Convention also provides a forum for the MPO to honor Macedonians of distinction and to hear from prominent speakers on issues relevant to Macedonians in North America. Macedonian speakers often speak of their heritage and how it has impacted their lives and contributed to their success while non-Macedonian speakers often provide valuable guidance and insight on Macedonian issues. Past Annual Convention speakers include: former U. S. Ambassadors to the Republic of Macedonia, Christopher Hill and Lawrence Butler; former Ambassadors of the Republic of Macedonia to the U. S., Ljubica Acevska and Nikola Dimitrov; former Governor of New York, Mario Cuomo, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Dr. Jeane Kirkpatrick, Macedonian-American businessmen Christopher Ilitch, and Mike Zafirovski; renowned Macedonian-American physician Dr. Leon Speroff; Macedonian-American Tim Goeglein, Special Assistant to President George W. Bush and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison; and Macedonian-Canadian filmmaker Sandra Danilovic.
