Convention

Grand Rapids, MI

August 30th - September 2nd, 2024

Dear MPO Members and Supporters,

We wish to draw your attention to recent articles on web portals from Bulgaria and North Macedonia, which cover the 103rd MPO Convention held from August 30th to September 2nd, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and reference text from two documents discussed during the Convention’s Delegates Assembly. While we value the positive tone of the coverage of this successful event, we need to provide the following clarification:

Please be advised that MPO’s protocol dictates that all decisions and documents from the convention are NOT considered official until we release them to the public. Upon release, these documents will be accompanied by an explanation of their rationale to prevent any misleading interpretations. Until then, any statements about our documents should be regarded as unverified claims.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

DECLARATION BY THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE MPO ON THE NORTH MACEDONIA-BULGARIA DISPUTE

Over 30 years have passed since the end of communism in the Balkans, yet tensions between North Macedonia and Bulgaria remain as high as ever—some might even say they have worsened. The discourse on both sides has been increasingly dominated by a vocal minority of nationalists, whose inflammatory rhetoric and actions are obstructing efforts toward normalization and rapprochement.

At the MPO, we believe that the time has come to put an end to this destructive cycle of discord and resolve the Macedonian Question between Bulgaria and North Macedonia in a way that honors and upholds the national interests of both countries. Achieving this would not only represent a strategic victory for the entire region but would also bolster the stability and resilience of NATO’s southern flank—an essential development in our current era of instability and turmoil.

To this end, the Central Committee of the MPO has issued the following Declaration, outlining our strategic guidelines for the resolution of the Bulgaria-North Macedonia dispute. We are committed to working with both governments to develop and implement the necessary mechanisms for fostering positive relations.

Our History

This kingdom, Macedon, became a great power under the leadership of Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great.  The Macedonians of this era were likely Illyrians, an ancient people who were probably the distant ancestors of the present-day Albanians.  By 148 B.C., Macedonia was conquered by the Roman Empire and became a Roman province.
